    FFG Star Wars Dice roller

The Fantasy Flight Games new Edge of the Empire Star Wars rules (and to an extent also their Warhammer Fantasy rules, which uses similar dice) uses unique dice symbols, but are otherwise pretty much the same polygonal dice you would find in the d20 rules (that is: D6, D8, D12 and percentile die d100).

The symbols on the Star Wars dice are:
    Advantage
    Success
    Triumph
    Threat
    Failure
    Despair

There is a conversion table in the rulebook which allows you to interpret a numeric result. This means that it’s very possible to use the dice roller as is. One of two convenience fixes would, however, be to add a 6th multiroll options to the dice roller. It only has five, and the rules uses up to six different dice at once: These Boost Die (blue D6), Setback Die (black D6), Ability Die (green D8), Difficulty Die (purple D8), Proficiency Die (yellow D12) and Challenge Die (red D12). In addition there’s the Force Die (White D12) and the d%, which works normally. Having all dice present in one multiroll would make cross-referencing easier.

The other fix is the long-term project of implementing the dice system in its own dice roller. The upside being ease of gaming and that it would essentially be a variant of the d20 roller. The downside being time and returning the symbols correctly (or text interpretations thereof).

Since there are currently few games (one currently) using this system, and having a separate dice roller at the moment is a matter of convenience more than necessity, I gave this a Low priority. However, in general supporting a variety of dice systems can only be seen at as a strength for the site in the long run, especially in regards to Star Wars system – one of the site’s main focus areas.

For future reference, here’s the conversions for each dice:

    Boost Die
    1 and 2: Blank
    3: 2 Advantages
    4: 1 Advantage
    5: 1 Advantage, 1 Success
    6: 1 Success

    Setback Die
    1 and 2: Blank
    3 and 4: 1 Failure
    5 and 6: 1 Threat

    Ability Die
    1: Blank
    2 and 3: 1 Success
    4: 2 Successes
    5 and 6: 1 Advantage
    7: 1 Advantage, 1 Success
    8: 2 Advantages

    Difficulty Die
    Ability Die
    1: Blank
    2: 1 Failure
    3: 2 Failures
    4, 5 and 6: 1 Threat
    7: 2 Threats
    8: 1 Failure, 1 Threat

    Proficiency Die
    1: Blank
    2 and 3: 1 Success
    4 and 5: 2 Successes
    6: 1 Advantage
    7, 8 and 9: 1 Success, 1 Advantage
    10 and 11: 2 Advantages
    12: 1 Triumph

    Challence Die
    1: Blank
    2 and 3: 1 Failure
    4 and 5: 2 Failures
    6 and 7: 1 Threat
    8 and 9: 1 Failure, 1 Threat
    10 and 11: 2 Threats
    12: 1 Despair

    The Force Die
    1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6: 1 Dark Side (black dot)
    7: 2 Dark Side
8 and 9: 1 Light Side (White circle)
    10, 11 and 12: 2 Light Side

I did not realize line shifting was something this system was not fond of…. Sorry for the wall (albeit a slim one at that) of text.

Ok, So I am making some progress on this, and want to get your opinion on how you would like these results to be handled via email. We have a few choices. A) I can create an HTML email that makes the email look just like the dice rolled on the site (i am using images for die rolls). B) I can send out text rolls (like how they are handled now) for emails, for example

    3 Ability: Success, Success, Blank

or I can shorten the text to like

    3 Ability: ssb
    3 Challenge: ttf

I’d guess that people like things visually, but it seems like a little more work than necessary. If text is easier, then text is fine. To avoid confusion I’d suggest using the full word. Threat and Triumph are the only ones with the same first letter, and they’re not even on the same die, but still. It seems clearer that way. By the way, I realize that the Force Die wasn’t present in the attached image, but you might’ve had some luck googling it for reference, perhaps?

JoJ can you log into the test site and go to board 91 and check out the die roller?

Give me your opinions, you should have permission.

That is pretty freakin’ awesome! The e-mail worked fine as well. The “Dice to be rolled” help text for this roller should probably read “enter the amount of each die to be rolled” instead of the D6-related note. But that’s probably just a place-holder anyway. Good work!

I guess I need to think about adding an option on the utils page so you can change your dice roller to this format?

do you ever need to roll more than 1 percentile dice set?

Nevermind… I just saw you put EotE on there.

No, you never need to roll more than one percentile set. It’s used for mainly two things, in case you were wondering: certain behind the scenes/between sessions stuff, and critical hit tables.
